Preservation Grants in Georgia
Both public and private agencies in Georgia have grant opportunities available for the preservation of historic buildings, landmarks and sites. Preservation, such as the repair, restoration and maintenance of a historic building, help ensure present and future generations of Georgia residents are able to enjoy and learn from reminders of the past.

Georgia Heritage Grant Program

The Georgia Heritage Grant Program, overseen by the Historic Preservation Division, issues matching grants for the repair, restoration and preservation of archaeological sites and historic buildings located in the state of Georgia. The applying agency must be a local government or private and nonreligious nonprofit agency and have funds to cover at least 40 percent of the estimated project cost available. The site or structure must be eligible for listing in the National and Georgia Registers of Historic Places and has to be listed prior to the grant disbursement. The awards are limited to $20,000 for projects prior to development, like a ground study, and $40,000 for projects involving physical development, such as repairs, as of 2011.
Historic Landscape and Garden Grant Program

The Garden Club of Georgia is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to gardening and education about gardening through activities. The club offers matching grants of up to $3,000, as of 2011, to local government or private nonprofit agencies for the restoration and preservation of historic gardens in Georgia. An applying agency must demonstrate its project would improve the experience of tourists visiting the garden, such as the installation of benches.

Lettie Pate Evans Foundation Grants

The Lettie Pate Evans Foundation issues grants to public nonprofits in Georgia that have a project with an emphasis on historic preservation. A formal application is not used; interested agencies must write a letter to the foundation and include information about the project, the agency itself -- including annual financial statements -- and documentation that the agency is not private. The grant amounts vary by project size, goal and type.
E. J. Grassman Trust

Th E.J. Grassman Trusts gives grants for historic preservation projects located within central Georgia. Organizations that work toward setting up a variety of funding sources and do not have high overhead costs have given priority for funding opportunities. Interested nonprofit agencies must contact the trust directly for application information, and grant amounts vary by project.
