Nurse midwives must graduate from a program accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives to be eligible to take the National Certification Examination for professional certification, required by most states for licensing. These registered nurses are considered advance-practice nurses, and most graduate with a master's degree, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The median salary for a certified nurse midwife was $91,321 per year as of March 2011, according to Salary.com. Nurse midwives in the middle 50 percent of the earnings scale made $84,035 to $99,548 per year. The top 10 percent had annual salaries of $107,037 and higher, and only the bottom 10 percent made $77,402 and less.

Median salaries for nurse midwives vary a great deal by location. In Waterloo, Iowa, for instance, they earned a median annual salary of $80,363 as of March 2011, while in Portland, Ore., the annual median pay rate was more than $15,000 higher, at $95,874. Nurse midwives in Jacksonville, Fla., had a median annual salary of $88,823; in York, Pa., $88,901; in Houston, $92,982; in Reno, Nevada, $92,992; and in Anchorage, Ak., $104,060. The top 25 percent of nurse midwives in Anchorage earned $113,434 and higher per year, and the top 10 percent $121,969 and higher.

Positions are available at hospitals, medical centers, free-standing birth centers, women's health clinics, Native American health services and Planned Parenthood. Some provide home birth services. Salary offerings have a wide range. Hourly pay rates ranged from about $32 to $55 per hour, translating to $66,560 to $114,400 for nurse midwives who work full-time year-round. Salaried positions had pay rates ranging from $60,000 to $115,000 per year. Supervisory position salaries ranged from $78,800 to $126,150 per year.
