St. John Ambulance First Aid Courses

St. John Ambulance offers a variety of first aid courses.

Founded in the United Kingdom in 1877, St. John Ambulance Association is a London-based, worldwide charity organization devoted to teaching emergency first aid in schools, workplaces and the greater community. It teaches first aid skills to roughly 800,000 people in a given year, with many of its students going on to become volunteers who attend emergency calls and provide care until an ambulance arrives, as well as provide transport for patients, first aid at public events and serve as an auxiliary to local ambulance services during major emergencies.

Early Years First Aid

The Early Years First Aid course focuses on emergency scenarios that are faced by professionals who look after children under the age of eight. Teachers, playgroup leaders and au pairs are among the child care professionals who can benefit from this course. The duration of the course is 12 hours, in which students learn how to cope with such emergencies as choking, asthma and diabetic emergencies, burns, sprains, bleeding, head injuries, seizures, strains, sprains and fractures, in addition to action planning.

First Aid at Work

The First Aid at Work course teaches common first aid skills that may be needed in a workplace environment. You can choose to take the three-day course either as three consecutive days or as a split course, depending on the center offering the class. Students are educated on how to deal with emergencies such as eye injuries, fainting, heart attacks, shock, burns and scalds, bleeding, poisoning, choking and seizures.

Emergency First Aid at Work

The Emergency First Aid at Work course is best for smaller workplaces that are less likely to present health and safety risks. The class duration is one day, in which instructors cover health and safety regulations, common workplace injuries, treatment of an unconscious casualty, managing an incident, bleeding, choking, seizures, shock, resuscitation and the priorities of first aid.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

The Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) course teaches students the skills required by an AED operator, and prior first aid knowledge is not necessary. The course lasts for four hours, and covers getting to know and operating the AED, heart attacks, resuscitation and treatment of an unconscious casualty.
