Vent-free vs. Direct-vent

The Empire Heritage gas stoves come as either direct-vent or vent-free models. A direct-vent stove pulls air in from the outside to start the combustion process. It then sends the exhaust created by the stove back outside. It uses a 4-by-6 5/8 inch vent pipe. A vent-free system does not use any piping, which saves space for smaller homes. All the heat and combustion are contained within the unit, making it more energy efficient. These systems also have an oxygen sensor, which causes the unit to shut off if the oxygen in your home drops to dangerous levels. This stove comes with a nonoperational 6-inch-diameter pipe, which makes it look like a regular vented system.

The Empire gas stove's dimensions are 28 1/16 inches wide by 17 3/8 inches deep by 27 3/4 inches high. You must leave 6 inches of clearance on the side wall and 4 inches of clearance between the stove and the corner wall. You must also have 36 inches of clearance between the ceiling and the stove, and either 1 inch (vented version) or 2 inches (vent-free) of clearance between the stove and the back wall.

Both the vented and ventless systems produce up to 32,000 British thermal units per hour (BTU/hr) with natural gas and up to 30,000 BTU/hr when using liquid propane. The vent-free system is up to about 90 percent efficient, and the standard models are 60 to 70 percent efficient. You can place these stoves on any type of flat surface, including tile and carpet, without using a floor protection pad.

Empire Heritage gas stoves are available in the following colors: Temple Gray, American Beauty, Adobe Frost, Patina Mocha and Venetian Gold. It comes with a six-piece log set and a burner, and it also features a wall thermostat, wall switch and remote control. You can purchase optional side shelves for your stove, which give it an old-fashioned look. It uses a standing pilot or a piezo ignition system. A piezo system does not require you to light a pilot light. You just need to turn on the unit to start it.
