Free Activities for a Princess Party

Free Activities for a Princess Party thumbnail
Invite each guest to come dressed as a princess.

Create a fairytale party on a down-to-earth budget. Your child will enjoy letting her imagination run wild with her very own castle, dressing the part with a princess crown and even making a matching tiara for her doll. Replace expensive cake with cheaper cookie activities and help children make their own party favors for free using household items. Add in a few themed games to create a special party fit for a princess. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Castles

    • Build a princess castle from a large cardboard box -- or tape two boxes together -- and provide paints or markers for the children to decorate and color the castle before playing in it. Cut a door and windows in the box for added detail. Use empty boxes you already have or ask your local electronics retailer to provide used refrigerator or washing machine boxes for free.

Alternatively, children can build and decorate their own small castle using cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls for towers and small boxes for turrets. Consider adding a drawbridge or balcony for extra detail. Each child can take home her castle as a keepsake from the party.

    Dress-up

    • If your child already has a selection of princess dress-up clothes and shoes, create a princess dress up station. Or provide a selection of face paints or make-up and nail polish -- depending on the age of the guests -- and style each guest's hair in a princess up-do.

Re-use a partially used princess coloring book to make a paper crown. Size a strip of construction paper to the child's head, then let her cut out and color princess-themed pictures from the coloring book to decorate the crown. Alternatively, cut out princess pictures from magazines.

    Edible Activities

    • Invite each child to bring a guest of their own -- a favorite doll -- to a special princess tea party. Have a place setting for each doll. Children can create miniature princess wands using toothpicks and pom poms, or make pipe cleaner tiaras for their dolls.

As an alternative to birthday cake, have children decorate crown-shaped cookies with frosting and candies. Make extra for the guests to take home as party favors.

    Games

    • Play a game of pin the crown on the princess, or pin the kiss on the frog. Tack a poster of a princess -- or frog -- to the wall, and give each child a crown -- or lips -- sticker. Blindfold the guest and then challenge her to pin the crown -- or lips -- on the poster. Whoever places her sticker closest to the correct location is the winner.

Children can test their inner princess with a princess and the pea game. Set out several pillows and cushions on the floor and place a tennis ball underneath one of them. After reading the story of the princess and the pea, challenge children to sit on each pillow and identify the one with the "pea" underneath. Increase the difficulty by switching out the tennis ball with a golf ball or marble.
