Homemade Goody Bags for Kids

Bubbles can be part of a homemade goody bag.

As guests leave a party, especially a child's birthday party, it is common for the host to distribute goody bags. These bags are a small token to thank the guest for taking the time to come to the party. Although many stores sell pre-made goody bags, these often contain items that will just be thrown away. Put together your own goody bags with items that the children will enjoy. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Containers

    • Traditionally, goody bags are made of plastic and are held closed with a twist tie. However, you can choose any type of container to hold the party favors. Zip-top plastic bags allow kids to easily get into their bags and seal them closed again to keep from losing items. Small paper gift bags in bright colors can be reused after the child has emptied the bag. Another idea is to use a gift item as the goody bag. For example, use a plastic beach pail, flower pot, wicker basket, purse or upside-down hat to hold all of the goodies.

    Items to Include

    • Choose age-appropriate items to give to children in the goody bags. Lollipops, chocolates, bubble gum and other small treats give the kids some goodies to enjoy right away. Also include a few small toys for the child. Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, small balls, card games, miniature cars and pencils are all common ideas. Let the birthday child help select the goodies to increase the chances that the items will appeal to children of that age.

    Themed Goody Bags

    • If the party has a specific theme, create homemade goody bags that reflect that theme. For example, at a luau-themed party, include a pair of inexpensive sunglasses and a beach ball in the goody bag. For a girl's spa-themed party, give a cosmetic bag that contains lotion, lip gloss, nail polish and a sleep mask. At a spy-themed party, give a goody bag with a magnifying glass, spy notebook and fingerprinting kit.

    Considerations

    • Goody bags are meant to be a small thank-you gift for guests, and they should not break your party budget. A few candies and a toy in a small bag is plenty, and you should only make more elaborate bags if you can really afford it. In addition, if you will be doing craft projects or giving out prizes at the party, these can be part of the goody bags. Set out a bag with each child's name written on it and have the guests put their crafts and prizes in their bags as they receive them. By the end of the party, they will have built their own goody bags.
