Theme Cakes for Boys
-
Themed cakes are extremely popular and most of the time can coordinate with the theme of the party. There are plenty of fun ideas that ensure you have a memorable cake. A Lego-themed party can be complimented with a building block cake. Bake a large sheet cake then cut it into smaller pieces. Place large marshmallows on top of each piece of cake and frost the pieces different colors so they look like blocks. Create a jersey cake for a sports-themed party. Bake a sheet cake and cut it into the shape of a jersey. Use frosting to decorate the jersey with the birthday boy's favorite team colors and add his name and number to the jersey.
Theme Cakes for Girls
-
Make a truly girly birthday cake for your child based on the theme of the party. Create a castle cake for a princess-themed party. Bake several cakes in the same shape, but in several different sizes. Stack the cakes and then create pillars for the top of the castle. To make the pillars simply cut long pieces of cake of equal size, set them on top of the cake in their appropriate spots then stick toothpicks into the base of each pillar so it connects the pillar to the cake layer. Frost and decorate as desired. For a butterfly-themed party, use confetti cake mix and cut the cake into the shape of a butterfly. Frost the cake with different colors to create the butterfly wings.

Photo Cakes
-
Photo cakes are popular choices because you can display a photo of the birthday boy instead of writing his name. This makes for a truly unique and personalized birthday dessert. Most bakeries are able to make edible photo cakes if you order a couple days in advance. Take your favorite photo of the birthday guest of honor and describe any specific colors or patterns you would like around the edges of the photo and sides of the cake.
Cupcake Towers
-
Bake cupcakes instead of traditional cake. Place the cupcakes on a tiered display stand to create a cupcake tower. Decorate individual cupcakes with a unique twist, such as creating fondant characters for each cupcake or placing all the cupcakes together on a cake plate and decorating them as a whole so they look like one complete cake. Another ideas is to add something to the cupcake itself to transform it. For example, create cupcake wands for a little girl's fairy party. Bake cupcake brownies and poke a cinnamon stick in the side of each brownie cupcake so it can be held like a real wand.
