Retail consultants are salespeople who help clients coming into a store in finding the merchandise they need. These workers are employed in a variety of settings including clothing or electronics stores, car dealerships and any other retail store where customers come for shopping. Usually retail consultants receive a salary along with a commission to help them stay motivated and sell. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that in 2009 retail salespersons earned an average salary of $24,630 per year.

The starting salary is usually at the federal or state minimum wage level. The BLS reports that in 2009 the average wage for retail salespeople ranged from $15,420 to $38,460 a year.
Salary by Store Type

There were more than 4 million retail salespersons employed in the U.S. in 2008. Clothing stores employed the largest number of retail salespersons, 699,510, followed by department stores, 475,640 and building materials and supply dealers with 409,100 workers. Building materials and supply dealers paid the highest wages, $26,920 per year, with clothing stores and department stores both paying just over $21,000 per year, according to the BLS.

Retail consultants working for employers with the lowest number of these workers made the most money in 2009, according to the BLS. Thus, insurance carriers and brokerage houses, commercial equipment leasing services and air transportation services firms on average paid from $41,940 to $42,970 a year. Auto dealerships also made it into the top five, with an annual mean wage of $42,970 as of 2009. Car dealerships, however, employed a significant number of these workers, 240,210.

The average salary for retail consultants in 2009 did not vary much from state to state, from the lowest $22,430 in some to $26,900 a year in others. The top five paying states in 2009, according to the BLS, were Washington, Connecticut, New York, Vermont and Florida. The average salary there ranged from $26,660 to $26,900 a year. For cities, workers in West Palm Beach, Florida, San Francisco, California, and Danbury, Connecticut, made the top dollar in 2009, from $29,840 to $31,370 a year, according to the BLS.
