About Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1

Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 was a security and bug fix update to the popular open source web browser that was released on July 16, 2008. The patch was released less than a month after Firefox 3, which was a major update to the browser that introduced numerous features including an overhaul of the address bar and a new rendering engine that greatly improved load speeds.

  1. Security Fixes

    • The most notable security patch introduced with Firefox 3.0.1 closed a hole in the browser that could be exploited to install software without explicit permission from the user during the normal course of browsing. The update also fixed malware database problems that would occur during browser startup. In particular, the update initiated a forced database update during browser startup, thus preventing users from being exposed to known security risks while browsing the web.

    Stability Fixes

    • There were a variety of minor stability issues corrected with the release of Firefox 3.0.1. The update solved browser crashes that would occur on the Mac operating system when loading malformed GIF images. Additionally, the update solved the issue of Firefox opening multiple tabs when a website address was opened from a command line interface.

    Bug Fixes

    • Mozilla indicated that numerous bugs were fixed with the 3.0.1 update to Firefox. The update fixed a bug that arose when a user ran both Firefox 2 and Firefox 3 simultaneously. Additionally, a printing bug that caused the page to be cut off when printing from the center of a webpage was resolved.

    Other Updates

    • A number of minor updates were included with Firefox 3.0.1 including support for dial-up connections in the Linux version of Firefox. In Firefox 3, users of the Linux version of Firefox would initially only be able to use Firefox in offline mode when connecting to the Internet using a dial-up or DSL connection.
