Ohio State Patrol Starting Salary


Ohio state patrol officers are referred to as state troopers. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the mission of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is "to protect life and property, promote traffic safety and provide professional public safety services with respect, compassion and unbiased professionalism." Salary for state troopers in Ohio is based on years of experience, longevity, shift and holiday schedules.


Candidates interested in becoming an Ohio state trooper must be between 20 and 34 and have a high school diploma or GED. U.S. citizenship and Ohio residency is required. Residency requirements may be waved for some applicants. Candidates selected for the application process must complete a physical evaluation and written exam. A pre-employment polygraph test, background investigation and psychological assessment are then administered within a four- to six-month timeframe.


Those who meet all qualifications complete seven months of police academy training. While at the police academy, state trooper trainees earn $18.66 per hour and receive benefits. Trainees must reside at the academy during training and are able to return home on the weekends.


First-year state troopers earn a base salary of $44,481.60 per year. After two years, salary increases to $47,185.60 per year. For three years of service, Ohio state troopers earn a base salary of $50,139.20 per year. After five years of service, the base salary is $55,692.80 per year, and state troopers with 10 years of service earn a base salary of $58,833.60 per year.

Additional Compensation

Ohio state troopers earn longevity bonuses. After five years of service, the longevity bonus is $1,260.04 per year. After 10 years of service, the longevity bonus is $1,514.45 per year. Along with the longevity bonus, state troopers earn shift differentials and fitness pay averaging $2,448 per year for all levels of experience. Because this occupation requires working holidays, state troopers earn paid holiday overtime ranging from $2,912.40 to $3,740.40 per year based on years of experience.
