Unusual Art Gifts

If you have a friend to whom you want to give a gift, consider a gift related to the arts. However, if you would like your gift to really stand out, instead of choosing standard things like art prints or paintings, give something a bit more unusual. There are a number of possibilities to choose from, depending on how much you want to spend and what you think your friend would like.

  1. Bust of the Recipient

    • If you are prepared to spend a great deal on your friend's gift, commission a sculpture to create a bust of your friend. This will require several photos that show closeups of your friend's head. It will help if they are taken from several angles. This sort of gift must be planned well ahead of the day you want to give it, since it will take the artist some time to finish.

    "This Is Your Life" Documentary

    • If you would like to give your friend a gift that you made yourself, and you happen to be handy with a camcorder, you can create a "This Is Your Life"-style documentary. Go to places your friend lived in the past or visit the schools he attended and take footage you can later add narration to. Conduct interviews with family members, friends and former teachers and employers. Have them recount interesting or amusing anecdotes about the recipient.

    Mural

    • If your friend has a favorite place, such as the beach or the mountains, you can hire an artist to paint a mural of this location on a wall in her home. Of course, this probably can't be done as a surprise gift, unless you both happen to live in the same house and your friend's spouse or boyfriend is willing to help you out by taking her on a trip for a few days.

    Stained Glass Window

    • Another interesting gift you can give to your friend is a small, framed stained glass window. Have an artist who does this sort of work create a photograph-sized piece of stained glass with a design, such as a flower or a bird. This section of glass can then be placed in a tabletop frame. Make sure there is no backing on the frame so that light can shine through the glass.
