Locksmith Resources
Although knowing how to repair a lock is one part of a locksmith's job, the locksmith must also know how to do tasks such as assess the possibility of a break-in at a business or home and use the appropriate doors and locks in a particular setting. Locksmiths can receive training at a trade school or as an apprentice, but books, magazines, websites and trade organizations can also provide with information.

Books
-
Books can be valuable resources for locksmiths because they provide a lot of information and are easily navigable, especially if they use contents and indexes. Lock Pick Shop publishes a number of titles in the art of picking locks. The company offers books for the beginner, intermediate and professional lock picker and some come with CDs that allow you to see how to perform the skills you are learning. Some publishing companies, like McGraw-Hill, feature several locksmith books. The McGraw-Hill catalog includes such titles as "The Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing" and "Master Locksmithing," which provide a survey of all of the terms, techniques and tools a locksmith will typically use.
Magazines
-
Locksmith magazines provide the most up-to-date information in the field of locksmithing. Because magazines are shorter in length than books, the information will not be as in-depth. However, unlike books, magazines feature the most recent developments in the profession. "The National Locksmith" is among locksmith magazines in the United States. Within its pages, you'll find articles on topics such as locksmith business mergers, tips on repairing car locks and upcoming locksmith trade shows.

Websites
-
You can also use the Internet as a resource for your locksmith needs. Thousands of websites are dedicated to locksmith topics, so finding the right ones can be challenging. Be wary of websites that do not have contact information to follow up with questions. One locksmith tool website is Locksmith and Tool Supply, while another site related to locksmithing is Education Portal. Locksmith Downloads is an Internet resource that provides training videos, how-to-articles and links to other reputable locksmith resources.
Professional Organizations
-
Professional organizations throughout the world serve as resources for locksmiths. The Associated Locksmiths of America, for example, is an international association that provides training, business listings and legislation resources to its members. The Institutional Locksmiths' Association is another large professional organization for locksmiths working in institutional settings like schools, hospitals and government facilities. Its members can participate in conferences, and obtain resources that will help them communicate their needs to their institutions, receive help with locksmith issues and locate the parts and supplies they need to do their jobs better.
