Collages can be a family activity.

Carnival games and art projects can be creative and social family activities. They are also practical for birthday parties and get-togethers. You can make hand made carnival games to play in the backyard, such as a baseball throw game and bean bag toss. Give candy as prizes to the winners. Also, there are many inexpensive art projects your family can make that you can give as gifts or use for home decor.

  1. Collage

    • Collages can be either group or individual art projects. The elements of the collage are based on your creative ideas. The project requires a large to medium sheet of paper, scissors, glue and pictures. You can use magazine pictures and/or pictures of you and people close to you. Cut out pictures with color shades that look good together or with similar feelings or portrayed ideas. Glue as many pictures as you can on your sheet of paper, some overlapping each other until your paper is completely covered in pictures.

    Painted Glass Vases

    • The painted glass vase art project requires an empty, clean glass jar or vase, acrylic paints, paintbrushes, white glue and a clear craft glaze. Practice with your paints on paper before you paint on the glass. Mix the paint with white glue, making sure the paint is thick so it doesn't run off the glass. Paint your design on the glass; if you make a mistake, you can wipe the paint off with a damp paper towel. When you are finished, let the paint harden and go over it with the clear craft glaze.

    Baseball Throw

    • Baseball throw is a classic carnival game that you can easily recreate in your backyard. You will need three rubber baseballs, five one-pound aluminum milk bottles and a table. Set up the table in front of a fence or a wall of the house so you will not lose any baseballs. Stack your milk bottles in a pyramid or assemble them next to each other in a triangle formation on the table. Each player has three tries to knock down all the bottles. Winners can receive a prize of candy. If young children are playing, make sure each child wins a small prize.

    Bean Bag Toss

    • Bean bag toss is another classic carnival game that you can easily assemble in your backyard. Cut six to eight medium-sized holes in an old or unwanted bed sheet. With a permanent marker, mark randomly whether each hole is worth 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 points. For a more professional look, you can use number stickers. Use stakes to secure the bottom of the sheet to the ground. Tie the top to a tree branch or another structure in your yard that will support it. You need three bean bags. Each player gets three shots. Have small prizes ready for the winners. If young children are playing, have small prizes for them too.
