A Visa gift card can be used like a credit card at any retailer or service provider that accepts Visa. Just like a credit card, a Visa gift card can be very useful when you don't want to pay up front or out-of-pocket for an item or service. The major difference between a Visa card and a Visa gift card is that the gift card has a certain balance on it, which you draw from each time you make a transaction; when the gift card has a $0 balance, you can toss it in the trash.

Use your Visa gift card to make online purchases at any retailer that accepts Visa. You need to register your gift card in your name prior to using it to pay for a product or service. To register and activate your card, follow any specific instructions included on or with the card. There is usually a 1-800 number printed on the front of the card you can call to activate your card. Once it's activated, enter your permanent address and contact number in the "billing address" field when you go to the site's online checkout.
