Valentine's Day Cards for Kid's Crafts

A homemade Valentine's Day card makes a much more memorable gift than a store-bought card because it lets the child's personality shine through the handiwork. Set up a craft day in the week leading up to Valentine's Day. Kids can give their homemade cards to family members or take them to school to give to their friends and teachers.

  1. Stamped Card

    • Stamps make it easy for kids to create their own cards that look the way they want. Gather a collection of rubber stamps with hearts, Cupid and sayings like "Be mine" or "I love you!" Kids can stamp with colored ink on white paper or with black ink on pink or red paper. For younger children who might have trouble applying even pressure to rubber stamps, make your own sponge stamps. Cut Valentine-themed shapes out of dry sponges and let the kids dip these in paint and stamp them on cards.

    Candy Hearts

    • Rather than giving candy conversation hearts for Valentine's Day, kids can select candies of their choice to put inside a heart-shaped card. To make the card, set a sheet of clear cellophane on top of colored card stock and cut both layers into a heart shape about 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall. Write a note on the back of the card stock heart. Punch a hole through both layers of hearts about every inch around the edges. Lace ribbon through the holes to bind the layers together. When the lacing is almost done, slip a few candies between the layers, finish lacing it closed and tie the ends of the ribbon into a bow.

    Love Bug

    • Kids can create a Valentine love bug on the front of a card. Cut heart shapes of approximately the same size from a variety of colors of paper. Glue the hearts to the front of a folded card so they overlap with each other and make a caterpillar shape. Glue googly eyes to the heart at one end of the caterpillar and draw antennae on with a marker.

    Photo Cards

    • Personalize a Valentine's Day card by adding a photo to it. One idea is to have the child cut heart shapes out of colored paper, tape them all over his clothing and take a picture. Print the photo, glue it to the card and add a note that says, "Can you see how much I love you?" For another type of card, glue any photo to the inside of the card, punch two holes in the front of the card so the child's eyes show through and write a message that says, "I've got my eyes on you." With any type of photo card, the child can draw pictures on it to personalize the card further.
