Industrial fire safety audits are designed to promote safety in industrial settings. A checklist for this is created and used to ensure that industrial organizations are complying with safety requirements. The items on the checklist are necessary for keeping employees and visitors safe when on company grounds.


An industrial fire safety audit checklist contains items regarding chemicals and proper storage and handling. All chemicals within the organization should contain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs). An MSDS contains information about the chemical, exposure to it and treatment information. Every chemical must have a label on it that is easily visible to anyone coming near it or in contact with it. Hazardous waste containers should also be available in proper locations and with proper labeling, instructions and free from leakage. All chemicals used within an industrial facility should have the proper permits and must comply with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations.

Evacuation Plans

An important part of an industrial fire safety audit checklist is an evacuation plan. All industrial-type companies must create and display an evacuation plan in the event of fire or any other emergency. This includes having lighted Exit signs with doors that are in proper working condition. Signs or arrows for exits should be displayed in a manner that allows employees and visitors to locate exits easily.

Protective Equipment

Requiring all people entering the facility to wear proper protective equipment is another section on an industrial fire safety audit checklist. This includes eye and hearing protection, respirators, helmets, gloves, boots, fire protection, hazard warning devices, life jackets, protective clothing, safety belts and safety vests. Protective equipment also refers to safety within the buildings. This includes providing nonslip rugs or pads, having fire extinguishers available throughout and providing first aid kits in various locations of the facility.

Employee Training

Appropriate training is also another section on a fire safety audit checklist. All employees should be trained accordingly, knowing what safety rules the company has. The safety rules in these types of companies are typically very lengthy and are designed to keep everyone entering the facility safe. Safety rules and procedures should also be posted throughout the facility, easily in view for workers and visitors. This section also includes teaching workers how to keep areas safe and ways to prevent fires and other accidents from happening.
