Mental health research grants may be both federally and privately funded.

A range of funding opportunities are available for those pursuing a research project in mental health. Such funding opportunities are typically made available from various research bodies, which may be both privately and federally funded. These research bodies commonly favor a specific area in metal health research.

  1. The National Institute of Mental Health

    • The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) organizes a range of funding opportunities. Awards are divided between research grants, fellowship and training grants and careers awards. The size of the awards vary and will depend on the specific needs of the NIMH at the time of application. The institute regularly announces funding opportunities on its website. Alternatively, speculative applications for grant funding may be made, and grants may be awarded, if the research proposal matches the research needs and interest of the NIMH.

The Brain and Behavior Research Fund

    • This fund is organized by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD). Three grants are available. The Young Investigator Award grants young scientists in neurobiological research up to $30,000 a year for up to two years, as of 2011. A total of 15 awards are made each year. The Independent Investigator Award amounts to $50,000 per year with a maximum of $100,000 over two years for those at the associate professor level or above. Established scientists in the neurology field may take advantage of the Distinguished Investigator Award, which totaled up to $100,000 for one year in 2011.

The International Mental Health Research Organization

    • The International Mental Health Research Organization (IMHRO) organizes three Rising Star awards for those engaged in research on schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder. As of 2011, the awards amount to $250,000 distributed over a course of three years. The grant is targeted towards those researching new technologies and strategies for combating these three mental disorders. Most award recipients are those who are leading research projects at universities and colleges.

    The National Institute of Health

    • The National Institute of Health (NIH) provides funding opportunities for research on a range of health disorders, including mental health. Like those organized by the National Institute of Mental Health, grants may be either solicited or applied for, and grant sizes will vary depending on the specific funding program. Unique research proposals of high scientific caliber are given the highest priority. Individuals as well as institutions are eligible to receive funding from the National Institute of Health.
