Great Gifts for Someone You Just Met

Whether you just started dating or simply made a new friend, trying to figure out an appropriate gift to give someone you've only recently met can be tough. You want to give a gift that shows that you like the person without going overboard. For a casual outing, limit your gift budget to less than $20 and avoid gifts with overly romantic implications, such as jewelry.

Board Game

  • A board game is a great gift for someone you've just met as it provides you with an activity you can perform together. If you and your date have talked about challenging each other to a Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit or Jenga game, give him a deluxe edition of the game; the two of you may end up playing that night. Another cute idea, if the two of you have talked about the board games you used to play when you were young, would be to give him a children's board game as Chutes and Ladders or Candy Land. He's sure to be appreciative of such a nostalgic gift.

Literary Items

  • If the two of you have shared a conversation regarding new literary releases or if you have been talking nonstop about a book you just finished reading, buy a copy of the book in question for her to enjoy. This thoughtful gift shows that you remember the conversations you and she have shared as well as how interested she was in reading the book.

Music CD

  • You can give him a copy of newest CD by his favorite artist; however, this gift only works if you know that he hasn't gotten it already. If he has, you could give him a music download gift card instead. Alternatively, you could create a playlist of artists he has never listened to or heard of. Tell him that you thought he might enjoy a particular artist or style of music and so you put a few tracks together.

Homemade Baked Goods

  • Homemade cookies or pies are simple yet delicious gifts for people who have just met. If you've been bragging about your baking skills, put your money where your mouth is by making something for her. If you're not skilled in the kitchen, ask a friend or family member to whip up your favorite batch of cookies and tell the person that you wanted her to experience what you consider to be the best recipe in the world.
