Questions to Ask Telemarketers

Questions to Ask Telemarketers thumbnail
Telemarketers can become a nuisance.

Everyday telemarketers make millions of calls throughout the United States, asking for your opinion on a product, whether you are interested in a service or for some other market research purpose. Although they do hold some importance and can get results, many people can become frustrated with constant calls throughout the day. Next time you receive a telemarketing call, ask a few questions that will help you to protect yourself, find out more information or stop the calls completely.

  1. Ask What Company is Calling

    • In the majority of cases, the telemarketer will be calling on behalf of another company that has outsourced the job to them. Ask for the name of this company, not the name of the company for which the telemarketer works. This way, you can contact the company directly if you want to be removed from its database.

    Ask for the Caller's Name

    • If you receive a call that you are not happy with, you can make a complaint. However a complaint will not be effective if you do not know the name of the person who has called you. Ask for his full name and the department he works in. If he refuses, hang up.

    Ask for a Mailing Address

    • Ask for the address of the company for which they are calling. If the calls do not stop, write directly to the company and keep a copy of the letter for your records. This will help to support your case against nuisance calls.

Ask for the Don't Call List

    • By federal law, all companies must have a list of numbers that they are not allowed to call upon the request of the customer. Ask to be put onto this list. This should stop them from continuing to call you. They are also required by federal law to have a written policy; ask for a copy to be sent to you.
