Salespeople do this through extensive travel that allows them to consult directly with the people who are buying and using their products.

    • The traveling salesperson is the public face of the company that he works for. In his travels he meets with regular clients and customers of the company, introduces them to new products and helps them with any problems they may be having with products they have already bought. Traveling salespeople may be involved with any number of products, ranging from simple household items to automobiles to corporate computer systems. People in this position are also the eyes and ears of their company, constantly on the lookout for new sales opportunities and markets.

    • Many large companies have offices, clients and business responsibilities in far-flung locations. Traveling salespeople who work for these large companies may find themselves traveling around the world to fulfill the sales obligations that are part of their job. Multinational corporations have become so large that national boundaries mean little to them and do little to restrict their financial dealings. These companies require large numbers of traveling employees to maintain contact between the wide-ranging aspects of their businesses.

    Advantages of a Traveling Sales Job

    • For someone who enjoys seeing new things, meeting new people and encountering new challenges, a traveling sales position can be a dream come true. This position allows an employee to make contacts in many different places and different companies. A side advantage of this situation is that, should the employee decide to move on from the company where she works, she will have had a chance to develop a comprehensive and diverse network of people in her field who can help her to find a new position.

    Disadvantages of a Traveling Sales Job

    • Many people find that their urge to travel and see new things diminishes as they grow older, get married and perhaps have children. If a person is financially dependent on a traveling sales job, he may find that he needs to spend a lot of time away from home whether he wants to or not. The novelty of a traveling job can wear off over time, as the inconveniences of anonymous motels and road food begin to outweigh the missed comforts of home.
