Growing your own vegetables can be a satisfying --- and healthy --- way to put food on the table, but a full garden may be impractical because of time and space constraints. Plastic pots, as long as they are large enough, are ideal for growing vegetables. Plastic pots hold moisture better than other types of pots, such as unglazed terra cotta, and are more durable than wooden tubs or glazed terra cotta or ceramic pots. Plastic pots are available in a wide variety of shapes, colors and styles; some mimic the look of terra cotta or feature embossed designs or a faux texture, such as basket weave. These options allow you to create an attractive garden design.

The most important consideration when choosing plastic pots for your garden is size. Plants with deep or wide root systems need plenty of space to grow, and if the pots are too small, your vegetable plants will become root bound. Root-bound plants won't thrive, and will die quickly. Carefully read the space requirements for the plants you choose, and purchase pots accordingly. Avoid planting too many seeds or transplanting too many seedlings into the pots to prevent overcrowding. In general, most pots can only handle a few plants at a time.

Drainage is another important consideration for your plastic pots. Because the pots hold moisture so well, it's key that they have adequate drainage so that your plants won't drown. When choosing a pot, ensure there are drainage holes drilled into the bottom, and create more if the soil stays too moist. To help with drainage, add a layer of river rock or crushed gravel to the bottom of the pot before filling it with potting soil.

Plastic pots are also more lightweight than other types, especially after soil and plants have been added, making them easier to move if necessary. When you use wooden or terra cotta pots, you need to prepare them before adding plants. Both types of pots need to be treated with a waterproofing medium to prevent damage, and it's a good idea to add a plastic liner to wooden containers. Plastic pots only need cleaning with mild soap and a thorough rinse before use.
