Now that you have your degree in marketing--or perhaps you are getting closer to the academic finish line--it is time to start brainstorming your career opportunities. Marketing is an industry that combines creativity with business. As such, you can employ your creative side, business side or both to find a career in marketing that is right for you.
Entry-level jobs are the starting points for bigger marketing careers. As someone who is just starting out in the field, you will need to work your way from the bottom up, gaining all the experience and hands-on expertise that you can possibly absorb. Many companies offer entry-level marketing jobs, including publishing houses, marketing and advertising firms and companies in other industries that need marketing staff in-house. Assistant positions such as marketing, advertising, global development and creative assistants are common entry-level marketing jobs.
Mid-level marketing jobs are available for those in the industry who demonstrate skills and knowledge in marketing and who have work experience in the field. Analyst and specialist positions are common mid-level jobs and may include marketing analysts, public relations specialists, content analysts and Internet marketing specialists. Analysts and specialists work within marketing teams to identify target audiences, research consumer demands and review prototypes.
Marketing managers are in charge of overseeing marketing teams, such as creative teams and/or development teams, to ensure that the work they are performing is in line with the strategic goals of the particular marketing project. There may be various levels of managers within a marketing or advertising company, such as assistant managers, lead managers and senior managers. Managerial positions usually require a background in marketing or public relations with a few years of experience supervising others in the marketing field.
The marketing industry relies on designers to create layouts, design logos, help with promotional materials and set up websites. A marketing designer is a specialty position that may require a particular educational background in graphics and design. These positions tend to be mostly creative, and are less administrative than other marketing jobs.
Writers and Editors
Marketing projects need content writers and editors to assemble catchy and creative wording for marketing materials from product labels to websites. Teams of writers and editors work collaboratively in a creative department of a marketing or advertising company. These, too, are specialty positions that require demonstrated experience and knowledge or expertise.
At the top of the marketing industry's food chain are the marketing directors. These positions are reserved for professionals who have dedicated many years to the industry and have demonstrated accomplishments and achievements. Directors run specific departments, control finances and manage the administrative end of the business. Within a company you may find different directorship levels such as an assistant director, co-director and senior director.
