Your kids will love these healthy, easy-to-make travel snacks.

Whether you're planning a cross-country road trip or you just need something quick to give the kids while you're out of the house, preparing healthy travel snacks for your children should be a top priority. Eating healthy travel snacks is important for maintaining a steady diet and avoiding greasy or sugary foods. Give your kids these healthy snacks no matter where they go, and pack some for yourself to save money while you're traveling. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Trail Mix

    • Trail mix is perhaps the quintessential travel snack option that children and adults turn to the most when they want something healthy to eat while traveling. You can find packaged trail mix in almost any supermarket, and you can often choose from a wide variety of flavors and different combinations of healthy food items like nuts, raisins, pretzels and dried vegetables. Making this snack at home with your kids at home lets you customize which healthy ingredients will be in your trail mix.

    Fruits & Veggies

    • Fresh or dried fruits and vegetables, including bananas, pears, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes and baby carrots, are healthy snack options your children can take almost anywhere. Fruits filled with natural sugars, like pineapple, grapes and apples, are great for satisfying a sweet tooth while children are out of the house, and vegetables high in fiber, like edamame, artichokes and broccoli, will keep your kids feeling full, and less fatigued, longer.

    Nuts

    • Nuts are a healthy, tasty snack for kids that are easy to store and take on trips. Nuts like almonds, pecans, pistachios and peanuts are rich sources of protein, fiber, phytonutrients, polyunsaturated fats and antioxidants like selenium and Vitamin E, making them great snacks for kids that are on the go. Nuts are high in calories though, so don't rely on nuts to account for all your kid's travel snack options, and try to limit daily servings to 1 or 2 oz.

    Popcorn

    • Popcorn is a tasty travel snack that can be stored in plastic bags, plasticware or other container to keep it fresh and intact for hours on end. While plain popcorn is low in calories, you can add salt, cayenne pepper and other seasonings to make it the perfect travel snack for your children. Avoid buttered and microwaveable varieties if possible, as they are less healthy than conventionally popped or naturally flavored popcorn.
