All drivers have the option of attending driving school to improve their driving skills and knowledge. Driving school students learn both the rules of the road and what to do, or not to do, when behind the wheel of the car. Department of Motor Vehicle driving schools teach a curriculum approved by the state in which they are located and operate.

  1. What is Driving School?

    • Driving school is a school that teaches individuals how to drive automobiles. In some states, new drivers are required to complete some kind of school or training before they are allowed to get their learner's permit or driver's license. Driving schools exist to help people become better drivers as well as fulfill legal requirements. Driving school has become more popular, as high school Drivers Ed classes have become increasingly less available, due to high operation costs and insurance issues.

    DMV-Approved Driving Schools

    • DMV-approved driving schools are driving schools that feature state-approved curricula. This means the driving school teaches information specific to the state in which the student lives and hopes to obtain a license. States have their own guidelines and curriculum that new drivers need to know.

    Attending Driving School

    • Driving school can be attended either in person or on-line, depending on the curriculum and requirements of the state. In states that require passing a class, but not any driving experience, the courses may be taken completely on-line without the student ever physically entering a classroom. In some states, such as California, students are required to have a certain amount of time behind the wheel as part of the DMV-approved driving school program. This means students must physically attend the classes. If your state requires driving school attendance prior to getting learner's permit driver's license, you should check with the state DMV to find out specific information, and a list of approved schools, prior to registering for classes.

    Driving School Versus Traffic School

    • Driving school and traffic school are not the same thing. Driving school is the term typically used to describe schools that teach people how to drive. Traffic schools, on the other hand, typically provide classes for drivers to either improve their knowledge, or to get out of paying legal fines and reduce the consequences of a ticket. Traffic schools can almost always be attended completely on-line, and rarely require any behind-the-wheel driving time. State-approved traffic schools are the only ones whose completion certificates can be used to reduce the number of points on licenses or minimize the consequences of a ticket.
