Requirements to Advance to a Five-Year Professional Teaching License
When teachers are initially given a license to teach by their states, the licenses are often of a temporary nature. More permanent, five-year licenses are granted after a teacher has proved herself in the classroom and met other state requirements.

Experience
-
After a few years of teaching, a teacher may be eligible for a five-year professional teaching license. At first, the teacher undergoes extensive professional development. They attend classes and are mentored by more experience teachers in some cases. Ohio, for example, requires teachers with a two-year license to submit to the state a letter from the superintendent that she has completed the mentoring section of her training program before she can get a five-year license. Iowa requires new teachers to successfully complete two years of teaching before an initial license can be converted to a five year license. The first few years as a teacher can be the most difficult, and learning how to handle whatever comes her way in the classroom is part of what a teacher must do to earn a five-year teaching license.
Alternative
-
Teachers who have completed an alternative training program may also be given a type of provisional license initially. Some teachers are given a job before they have earned any type of license. These teachers complete a training program while they are on the job. They meet with their mentor teachers and take classes on how to become a teacher while they work in a classroom. They learn on the job. They will have to complete their training programs and take state teacher exams before they can get the five-year teaching license

Testing
-
In some cases, a teacher must meet a particular state's testing requirements before he can get a five-year teaching license. This may occur if the teacher is from another state. The teacher will have to fill out reciprocity paperwork to have his license recognized by his new state. In addition, the new state may require him to take its tests to prove knowledge of subject matter as well as of teaching in general.
Different Paths
-
A teacher must take courses in how to teach or in professional development during the year or years of her initial teaching license. Professional development courses are also required of teachers after they earn a five-year license. Each teacher's path to earning the five year license is different, depending on her education, experience and where she lives. Some states have more stringent requirements to earn the five-year license than others.
