May Day Basket Ideas

Using flowers, baskets and doorknobs, you can make several people happy this May Day. Put flowers in a baskets and hang them on doorknobs or leave them on doorsteps. When the residents open their doors, they'll know someone was thinking of them on May 1 because of their surprise May Day basket.

  • Use diverse containers to hold your flowers for your May Day baskets. Use wicker baskets or other traditional-style baskets. If you like to recycle, cut and decorate used milk cartons or plastic jugs to make baskets. Punch two holes in the sides and tie on a ribbon for the handle. Make cone-shaped containers from sturdy paper. Add a strip of paper or ribbon to the top of the cone for hanging the basket. Party hats can be decorated to make cone containers, too. Use your imagination to create baskets from other items, such as small boxes and paper plates.

  • Include spring flowers in your May Day basket, such as dahlias, tulips, cherry blossoms, daffodils and zinnias. Create a spring mixed bouquet or use one flower type. If you want to send a message through your flowers, put a specific type of flower that carries a meaning in your basket. Make flowers using tissue paper, colorful construction paper, cardstock or wrapping paper and then place them in handmade baskets. Consider using silk or artificial flowers, too.

Small Gifts

  • Include small gifts in your May Day baskets. Homemade chocolate treats, lollipops or cookies will sweeten up your basket. Store-bought candies can be included, too. For a healthier treat, include fresh fruit, such as a small apple or orange. Your gifts don't have to be edible. Consider a pen for a writer or a golf ball or two for a golfer. Consider the preferences of the recipient before you add your gift.

  • Include a small handwritten note in your May basket. The note may just be a friendly spring greeting or a special message for the recipient. If the flowers in the basket have a specific meaning, you can jot it down on the note. Include a copy of a poem or create your own to include in the basket. Create a handmade card and place it in the basket as another option.
