Advantages of Stall Converters

The majority of cars on the road today have automatic transmissions.

Most drivers can tell you that their vehicle has an automatic transmission, but they may not know the answer if you ask them how that transmission works. Automatic transmissions allow drivers to operate their vehicles without having to press in a clutch pedal and shift every time the car needs to change gears. The stall converter is an important component of an automatic transmission.

  1. What Is a Stall Converter?

    • A stall converter is also more commonly known as a torque converter. The term "stall converter" comes from the clutching and stall preventing functions it performs. It is the component of your automatic transmission that performs the clutching function. It is a round device located in between the engine and the transmission of your vehicle, and its primary purpose is to allow the engine to idle while the transmission is engaged in a gear. There are several advantages to having a vehicle equipped with a stall converter.

    No Manual Clutch

    • The stall converter removes the need for the driver to use a clutch to operate the vehicle. Without the stall converter, you would have to manually depress a clutch in order for your transmission to shift into gear.

    Quicker Acceleration

    • The internal components of the converter work together to multiply the amount of torque generated between the engine and the transmission. The torque converter works similarly to a reduction gear; as the internal impeller spins more quickly than the turbine, it generates additional power that can be used to provide faster take-off and acceleration.

    Convenience

    • Most drivers are unaware of what their automatic transmission and its stall converter are doing as they drive their car. This is probably, by far, the biggest advantage a stall converter has. It allows drivers to simply drive, without worrying about which gear their transmission is in on take-off or having to press a clutch in order to shift. The stall converter allows the transmission to go through the gears without the driver's help, allowing him to devote more attention to the roadways and traffic rather than the mechanical operation of his vehicle.
