Student Council Leadership Activities
Students who take part in student council programs learn valuable traits that transfer to their social lives. In addition to learning how to work as a team, make decisions and solve problems, the students also learn leadership skills. Student council leadership activities are pivotal in teaching the entire council or body of students how to become leaders.
-
Building Blocks
-
Write out a series of words, terms or phrases that relate to leadership, such as "strong will" and "determined," on small slips of paper. Divide the student council into groups of two members, or let the students work on the project alone. Pass around a hat, with the slips folded up inside, and give each group or student one slip of paper. Set groups of building blocks on the table, and assign a set to each group. The students have a set amount of time, for example, 30 minutes, to create something with the blocks that remind them of the word or exemplify the word.
Blindfolded Course
-
Build an obstacle course at the school, creating several unique areas of the course. For example, you may make a water hazard, a rope swing or a tire course. You can even make a more basic obstacle course consisting of a simple path, with blocks and other hazards along the pass. Divide the student council into multiple two-person teams. One team member acts as the leader, while the other wears a blindfold and runs through the obstacle course. The team leader directs the person through the obstacle course, describing what they must do to get through it safely.

Crisis Training
-
Turn the student council room into a role-playing game. Give the students a specific scenario and ask them to determine what to do or how to proceed. Ask the students to pretend that war broke out or that aliens just invaded the school. For a more basic idea, pretend that a group vandalized the school. The students must identify the problem, find a possible solution and determine how to best go about solving the problem.
School Project
-
Host a schoolwide event or project that puts the student council in charge. Hold a charity event that raises money for a local cause, a book sale for the school library or a community dance. Assign each member of the student council a different leadership position such as the head of refreshments, head of entertainment or head of donations. The students ask others to join their committee and lead their individual groups.
