Osteopath Schools

Almost 20 percent of today's medical students are studying to be Osteopathic doctors. Licensed osteopathic doctors specialize in a broad spectrum of medicine; they administer drugs as well as perform surgeries. Osteopath schools vary from traditional medical programs. In large part, Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to wellness. Philosophically, osteopathy is the parent of chiropractic medicine. Following are four osteopath schools in distinct U.S. regions.

  1. University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine

    • Founded in 1978, the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine is listed in U.S. News and Word Report's best medical schools for 2011. The Portland, Maine school touts it always "puts the patient first."

    Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences

    • Yakima, Washington is home to PNWU. The Universities' College of Osteopathic Medicine has a community-focused approach. Both it's philosophy and training are specifically geared to rural medicine in under-served areas.

    Georgia Campus: Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

    • PCOM expanded into Georgia due to the need for primary care doctors in the South. Located in Suwanee, GA., the campus was built in 2005. While the Georgia campus is new, PCOM has been training health care practitioners for over a century.

    Touro University: California

    • Founded in 1971 in New York, N.Y., Touro College was built on Judiac and democratic ideals. Touro University - California shares the same foundation, observing the Jewish calendar. Touro College's California campus is located in West Hollywood.
