Hairstyles of the early 1960s were flippy and flirty. This was right before the flowering of hippie culture. Women had traded in the poodle-type curls of the 1950s but hadn't yet embraced the long, free hair of the late 1960s. The Bump

The style in the late 1950s was the huge bouffant. In the early 1960s, hair began to deflate a bit, but all-over volume was still necessary. To achieve an all-over gravity-defying look, blow dry hair upside down, then lightly tease sections all over the head. Cover teased hair with smooth sections of hair. Hair should appear full all over, not only at the back of the head.

Spray, Baby, Spray

Hairspray is your best friend when creating a Jackie Kennedy-worthy look. Hairspray should be applied to teased hair to help give it volume and staying power. Additionally, top your hair with hairspray to keep it looking smooth. Finish a completed bouffant with a nice cloud of hairspray. Applying so much spray to clean locks may make them feel untouchable, but the polished look you'll achieve will be worth it.

Creating a Look

After your hair has been teased and sprayed, you have several styling options. Hair can be left down for a casual look, flipped up at the ends. Or hair can be pulled back into a bumped ponytail or French twist for a more professional style. You might choose to pull back half your hair for a youthful, easy look.
