Games for Grammar Skills

Having a good grasp of grammar is an important skill for both children and adults, but paying for tutors or lessons becomes expensive. If you struggle to stay motivated while studying the do's and don'ts of the English language, games for grammar skills may be a big help. Free online games will not only help build good grammar skills, but also do so in a way that is engaging. These games will work on any computer that has Internet access.

  1. Parts Of Speech

    • Parts of speech games aim to teach you how to use different parts such as verbs, nouns and adjectives in a sentence. Some games do this by first explaining the different parts of a speech, then giving you example sentences in which you have to identify these elements. "The Grammar Gorillas" is one such title suited for both beginners and advanced students. Games like "Rats" give you the task of differentiating between common and proper nouns by catching words that fall from the sky.

    Tenses

    • Another important grammar skill is the correct use of tenses to indicate where in time a situation takes place. Games that help with tenses sometimes take the form of a quiz. An example of such a game is "Treasure Hunt." The game displays a sentence and you have to specify which word (or words) is a verb. Other variations of tenses games give you a sentence with the verb missing and you have to fill it in using clues that indicate in what tense it should be.

    Prefix and Suffix

    • Adding a prefix or suffix to a word can modify its meaning and there are some free games available that demonstrate this. "Race To Ramses" is a good example of these games, as it gives players the mission to reach the treasure chamber of a pyramid by solving a series of prefix and suffix puzzles. You have to combine a word correctly with its prefix or suffix to unlock various doors and progress in the game. Some of these games, such as"Short Circuit," give you the prefix and suffix and task you with matching it up with the correct meaning.

    Double Negatives

    • Double negatives can trip up anybody, so it is good practice to play games like "Joanne's Job Interview." In this game, you have to complete activities such as writing a formal letter, completing an application form and succeeding in an interview--all by avoiding the use of double negatives. At the conclusion of each game you receive a detailed explanation of why certain words fit some situations better than others and why it is good grammar to avoid double negatives. You can also play a quick quiz game to brush up on how not to use two negatives in one sentence.
