Use activities to help your kindergarten students learn English.

Children can often learn languages more easily and more quickly than adults. Kindergarten is a good time for children to learn English as a second language. If you are teaching children English as a second language in kindergarten, there are numerous activities that are enjoyable for the children and which will help them to learn English vocabulary and sentence structure.

  1. English Animal Names

    • Make different animal cards by drawing a picture of each animal on one side of the card and coloring it with markers of coloring pencils. Hold up the card and ask the children "what is this?" or "what are these?" for pictures of more than one animal. Students should answer in a sentence by saying "this is a__" or "these are___." You can also ask the children what color the animal is, what it likes to eat and where it lives.

    Colors and Shapes

    • Cut out shapes from different color construction paper. Tape the shapes up around the room. Put children in different groups and call out a shape and color. The children have to find the right shape and color, take it off the wall and bring it back to their group. The groups to collect the most shapes and colors wins.

    Around the Town

    • Draw pictures of different buildings, including, for example, a library, police station, school and hospital. Write the name of the building below the picture. Tape up the pictures around the classroom. Call out the name of the building and have students go to the correct picture.

    Describing People

    • Draw different people on a set of cards you cut out of construction paper. Color in the different pictures. You can give different people in the cards different uniforms to show what kind of job they might have. Put the cards face down in the middle of each table. Children have to pick up a card, show it to the others at the table and describe the person on it.
