Kids' Clothes from the 1970s
Looking through old 1970s photographs, the children's clothing is distinctively of that era. The distinguishing factor of the '70s look is less about accessories or color pallet, and more about tailoring and fabric selection. Polyester, denim and leather were in, and the cuts for shirts, dresses and pants were all about the flare. Children's clothing was often less "hip" than teenage clothing, and school clothes often had a parent-inspired 1950s or 1960s impression.

Boys
-
Boys in the '70s would frequently wear straight-legged or bell-bottom jeans with white tennis shoes. Popular shirts were horizontal striped T-shirts or long-sleeved polo shirts with horizontal stripes. Dress attire would often include a wide-collar button-down shirt with a vest and bell-bottom khaki pants, or dress slacks with a plaid button-down collared shirt, tucked in. For school, boys would often wear plaid pants with a short-sleeved polo shirt. During summer, boys would frequently wear jean shorts or Adidas brand shorts with plain, striped or graphic T-shirts.
Girls
-
Girls frequently wore button-down blouses with embroidered patterns or floral designs stitched on the fabric. A popular ensemble included jumpers with turtlenecks, knee-high socks and a belt around the waist. School clothes frequently included peasant blouses with embroidery stitching and bell-bottom jeans. Flowing cotton shirts with bell-bottom sleeves were worn by girls and women alike. Moms in the '70s would often make homemade mod-style dresses for their young daughters, which came above the knee and were paired with Mary Jane-style shoes.

Unisex Fashions
-
Unisex polyester shirts with action scene photos printed on the front were a frequent choice for '70s boys and girls. Short athletic-style shorts, particularly Adidas brand shorts, were everywhere. Crochet vests, cut-off jean shorts, leather bomber jackets and blue jean overalls were popular for boys and girls. Homemade sweaters with designs on the fronts, probably handmade by Grandma or Mom, are often seen in '70s yearbooks. Corduroy pants in a neutral color and jersey-numbered T-shirts were also popular for girls and boys.
Accessories
-
Jewelry in the '70s was often glittering or made of colorful plastic. Sequins, decorative belts and mood ring selections extended to school-age girls. Popular children's shoes included Earth shoes, brown leather GASS or Great American Shoe Store shoes, clogs, Adidas sneakers, Buster Brown shoes and Chuck Taylor sneakers. Clip-on suspenders and knee-high soccer striped socks were popular for boys, and girls would often wear red or brown tights.
