Solutions for Disciplining Children Who Say Bad Language

Most children experiment with bad language at one point or another. Whether you have a toddler repeating bad words he heard from an adult or a teenager using foul language to sound cool, it is advisable to discipline him. Having some punishment ideas in mind may help you keep that dirty mouth in check.

  1. Swear Jar

    • Making a family swear jar can help curb your child's use of profanity. Naturally, your child needs to have money to put in the jar, so give her age-appropriate chores and pay her for her work. Make a set fee that must be deposited into the swear jar when any family member, including the grown-ups, gets caught cursing. Use the contents of the jar to go on a family outing.

    Writing Assignments

    • Writing helps children commit concepts to memory, so it can be a helpful tool when trying to teach them something. If your child uses a swear word, have him write an essay or paragraph explaining his choice of words. Or, you can have him write a list of words he could have used instead of the profane word he chose.

    Timeout

    • Kids often swear when they are frustrated or angry. For this reason, making a child take a timeout can help her calm down and think more rationally. It also gives her time to think about her actions. The timeout should be one minute in length for every year old that she is.

    Loss of a Privilege

    • Taking a privilege away from your child when he swears can be extremely effective. Older children, who have developed habits and understand the concept of certain things being a privilege and not a right, tend to respond more favorably to this form of discipline. Consider suspending your child's right to watch TV, talk on the phone, use the Internet or play video games.
