Affordable Teaching Degrees
The United States is in constant need of well-trained, committed teachers. However, prospective teachers may be deterred from entering the profession because of the expense of teacher's education programs. There are several affordable options available to students. Besides attending traditional programs at a public or private school, students can earn their degrees online. Whether you attend school on campus or online, you can find an affordable option that is right for you.

Online Teaching Degrees
-
Online teaching degree programs are among the least expensive options available. These programs are convenient for those students who wish to continue working at a full-time or part-time job while taking classes from home. Depending on the program you choose, you can attend classes in the day, evening or on weekends. Although you may not be required to attend a physical campus on a day-to-day basis, you may be required to take exams on campus periodically. Online campus options are also ideal for students who cannot attend a physical campus or for those students who do not have a suitable, affordable program in their areas.
Public Options
-
Students wishing to pursue affordable teaching degrees might consider public college options. These institutions receive state and federal funding to support their operations. Like other schools, students attending teaching programs at these institutions can receive state and federal financial aid. For example, students can be eligible for federal Pell grants and state academic achievement scholarships. Students can also receive federal loans to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses. Students considering a public option should decide what teaching degree they wish to pursue. There are options available for associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from these institutions. To be admitted to these programs, students must meet the program prerequisites, such as a minimum grade-point average.

Private School Options
-
Although private schools are often thought to be more expensive than public institutions, this is not necessarily the case. Like public institutions, students attending private schools have access to scholarships, loans and work study, which can help defray out-of-pocket expenses. Private schools often have larger endowments than public schools, which allow them to offer greater financial incentives to their students. These schools also offer federal work study and loans. Although students are required to repay these loans after graduation, the loan repayments are extended over several years, making the degree an affordable option.
Third-Party Financial Aid
-
Even if you wish to attend a public, private or online school that you consider to be out of your price range, you can still make the program more affordable. Besides campus-based scholarships and loans, many third-party foundations and nonprofit organizations offer scholarships and grants to students wishing to pursue a teaching degree. For example, Teachers Count lists several third-party organizations, including the American Association of Physics Teachers and the Applegate/Jackson/Parks Future Teacher Scholarship that offer scholarships to those wishing to earn teaching degrees.
