Infuse the theme of a party into every element, even the snacks.

A little creativity goes along way in party planning. Turn a traditional venue or nontraditional location into the party of a lifetime. Begin with a theme that reflects your child's interests. Choose age-appropriate activities, snacks and favors that mirror the theme to ensure an unforgettable birthday bash for your child. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Zoo

    • Invite your child's friends for a day out at the zoo. Save on decorations and entertainment as the zoo provides everything. If the zoo does not offer guided tours for parties, invite the guests' parents to help chaperon. Inquire about a party room to serve snacks and drinks. If a room is not available, organize a picnic luncheon at the zoo. Serve animal-related foods like pigs in a blanket and animal or goldfish crackers. Consider purchasing or baking a cake in the likeness of the birthday child's favorite animal.

    Indoor Playground

    • Similar to an amusement park or playground, invite children to a local indoor playground to celebrate your kid's birthday. Unlike similar locations, indoor playgrounds make suitable party places year round. The children play on age appropriate equipment like slides, ball pits and mazes. Most indoor playgrounds provide food and beverages as well as a private party room in addition to the equipment, which means less planning for you. Send each child off with a goody bag full of playground related favors like sidewalk chalk, a skipping rope and a yo-yo.

    Craft Store

    • Host your child's next birthday party at a craft store. This nontraditional location provides venue, activity and favor, leaving only food and beverage for you to supply. Most craft stores, like Michaels and Joann's, offer craft classes for kids. Guests learn a new craft and make a party favor. While the kids take the class, shop around the store to fill goody bags with arts and craft related items. Choose from stickers, paper, stamps, silk flowers and even gift cards. Show off your creative side with homemade snacks and birthday cake for the guests to enjoy.

    Bowling Alley

    • Invite your child's friends to the bowling alley for a twist on the traditional party location. Play the first game regularly and the following games making silly throws. Silly throws include tip toeing to the line before throwing, using the opposite hand to throw and creatively posing after a throw. Award the child with the silliest throw a prize. Rent multiple lanes with and without bumpers so the adults can also join in. Serve bowling themed cupcakes with ball and pin shapes made out of icing on top.
