What Is a Board-To-Board Fence?
Board-to-board fencing, also called "board-on-board" or "shadow box" fencing, is a popular style of wooden, residential fencing. Board-to-board fencing is most often used to visually and physically separate on yard from another. A distinct feature of board-to-board fencing is that, visually, it is identical from both sides, unlike stockade fencing that has one ornamental side and one side showing the underlying post and rail structure of the fence. Does this Spark an idea?

Underlying Structure
-
A variety of construction systems are used in residential fencing. Nearly all wood fencing systems use vertical posts of some kind with horizontal cross--members or "rails." Several subcategories of "post and rail" fencing are not covered with fence boards; they are a see-through barrier and would not contain small animals like dogs. Structurally, board-to-board fencing is like post and rail fencing with the addition of fence planks on both sides of the posts and rails.
Fence Planks
-
Board-to-board fencing has fence planks fastened to each side of the post and rail framework. There is no fixed standard for dimensions, but fence planks are commonly 1-by-8-inch boards, 6 feet tall. Imagine looking at the fence from directly above it. You'll see the fence planks are staggered so that a gap between the fence planks on one side is visually blocked by the back of the fence plank on the other side, due to the stagger.

Posts, Post-holes, Hardware and Rails
-
Fence posts are generally secured in concrete, poured into post-holes, equidistant from one another. As with fence planks, there is no fixed standard for lumber dimensions, though many municipalities have height restrictions and other building and design standards for fencing. Often, pressure-treated lumber is used for both posts and rails. To aid in construction, galvanized metal fasteners or clips are often used fasten the horizontal rails to the posts.
Visual Symmetry
-
Several types of fencing have visual symmetry---they look the same from the inside as the outside --- unlike Stockade fencing which is like board-to-board fencing without fence planks on one side and with tighter gaps between the fence planks. However, other types of visually symmetrical fencing tends to be more expensive than board-to-board fencing. That's why it is a common choice for "production" housing. It offers a visual and pet-proof barrier and it doesn't make you choose who is going to look at the less appealing side of the fence.
