Baby Quilt Pattern Ideas

There are hundreds of designs to use for baby quilts.

Quilts are somewhat difficult to make because they are time consuming and require a lot of work. Each block of the quilt must be completed with stuffing and backing before the quilt can be put together. Babies' quilts are smaller than full-sized quilts, which requires less time. To make the design process easier, construct your pattern design onto graph paper to help you determine the best look for your quilt.

  1. Colors

    • Use the other colors present in the baby's room as a guide for your quilt colors. You do not want the quilt to clash. If you consult with the parents of the baby ahead of time, you will be able to determine the best colors to use. If you are unable to determine the exact colors in the baby's room, using pastel colors is often the best choice ,as many parents choose soft colors for their babies. Pinks and purples are always a good choice for girls, as are shades of blue for boys.

    Geometric Shapes

    • Geometric shapes are some of the easiest to put into a quilt pattern. It is easier to cut quilt blocks in geometric shapes than other shapes, such as animals. Squares, triangles, circles, stripes and rectangles are simple patterns to use for a quilt. Use different patterns combined in the same quilt to add interest to a simple design. Use a patchwork pattern where every block is the same size if you are a novice quilter.

    Animals and Nature

    • Animals are always a popular choice for baby's rooms. Both boys and girls use animals in their decorating schemes. Animals can be easy or hard to put in a quilt, depending on how you make the quilt. The simplest way to make an animal quilt is to use a fabric that has animal pre-printed onto the fabric. For a more challenging quilt, cut out the shape of the animal from different patterns or colors of fabric and sew them together to make the animal shape. Another quilt design for babies is a tree design complete with animals or birds, or another simple nature scene.

    Letters

    • Letters are easy to implement into any baby décor. You can find fabric with the alphabet already printed, or you can cut out the letters yourself from different colors and patterns of fabric. Sew the letters to quilt blocks to complete the quilt. You can also make a quilt with the child's name, or a verse from a poem. A simple letter design using the child's initials in the corner or middle of a basic quilt adds an elegant touch.
