A casino manager must have excellent interpersonal skills.

The bright lights, tumble of dice and the clinking of coins being dropped into slot machines mark out the casino and promise fun and, possibly, profit for the punter. Someone has to ensure that everything runs smoothly so customers can have the best time; that responsibility falls to a casino manager. The casino manager -- sometimes known as a gaming manager -- oversees all aspects of a casino's operation and his salary reflects his senior position.

  1. Duties

    • A casino manager has extensive duties. These include hiring, training, managing and firing staff, ensuring all games operate legally, monitoring the casino's finances, dealing with customer complaints and explaining company policy to them, enforcing security measures and checking client credit card transactions. He will also monitor activity on the gaming floor and respond to any issues that arise.

    Average Salary

    • A 2009 survey conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average salary for a casino manager working in the United States was $74,030. This is equivalent to a monthly income of $6,169 and an hourly pay rate of $35.59. The BLS reported that the average wage among the lowest 10 percent was $40,640 while their counterparts in the top 10 percent received an average of $115,420.

    Salary by Industry

    • The BLS also showed that wage levels for the profession can vary according to the type of gaming establishment. The highest-paying sector was management of companies and enterprises -- which may mean management of casinos in more than one location -- with average pay of $98,520 per year. In contrast, managers overseeing gaming at spectator sports got an average of $65,340, a little less than managers in other recreation industries that have gaming facilities, listed at $67,090.

    • A second important factor in determining casino manager salary levels is the location of the operation. The BLS listed Missouri and Pennsylvania as the most lucrative states, across all industry sectors, with average wages of $95,280 and $94,110 respectively. New Jersey and Nevada had comparable levels of pay --$85,400 and $85,270 respectively -- while Mississippi offered $70,120.
