Include items in the treat bags that will make the party fun.

Treat bags are often given as party favors at children's birthday parties, but they can be used for other occasions as well, from a Valentine's Day celebration to a classroom Halloween party. These small bags filled with candy and other goodies are easy to personalize. Fill a simple plastic bag with a handful of candy for a quick and inexpensive treat bag, or splurge on a lavishly decorated bag full of toys; the choice is up to you and your budget. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Bags

    • Presentation makes the package. Make your treat bags extra-special by paying as much attention to the bag as you do to the treats themselves. Integrate art activities by asking the children to decorate plain white paper lunch bags with glitter, stickers and markers. If you don't want to decorate an entire bag, add a handmade label instead. Alternatively, use small fabric or felt bags rather than disposable paper or plastic bags. Small round bags shaped like pumpkins or hearts, for example, are perfect for Halloween or Valentine's Day treat bags. You don't even have to know how to sew; simply cut out the shapes and glue them together with fabric glue.

    Filler

    • The contents of the treat bags are only limited by your imagination. Candy is always a hit, as are other sweet treats. Healthier food items might include popcorn balls or granola bars. Include items to make the party or event more fun, such as noisemakers, balloons or even plastic sunglasses for a summer-themed bash. Stickers and art supplies are good gender-neutral choices that encourage creativity and are usually inexpensive.

    Themes

    • Create bags that will enhance the theme of your event. In addition to candy, also include specific items that match your theme. Fake jewelry is fun for a "spa" party, while participants in a pirate-themed party will appreciate small toy swords and plastic eye patches. Use red bandannas as bags (or even plastic cowboy hats) for a cowboy-themed party, or inexpensive purses for a dress-up party. You can even play party games with the items in the treat bags. Put a red ball in each bag except for one. In that bag, slip in a blue ball. Pass out the bags and see who has the blue ball. Give that child a small prize.

    Considerations

    • Always choose age-appropriate items for your treat bags. For example, both hard candies and balloons pose choking hazards for toddlers. Consider any specific needs of the children as well. Peanut-butter cookies may be delicious, but if a child has a peanut allergy, they could also be life-threatening. Think about the parents' preferences as well; some parents might not like the idea of their child getting a toy gun or other weapon. Other parents might be fine with a toy gun, but not so happy when their child comes home with a bulging bag of candy. Try to find a good balance between sweet treats and non-edible prizes.
