Father's Day was founded in 1910 to create a day when children could show love and appreciation for their fathers. Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. This day is celebrated by giving father's gifts and cards. Setting up games for men to play with each other or their children is another way to celebrate Father's Day.

Backyard Golf

This Father's Day game is appropriate for fathers who are golf enthusiasts. Set up a mini golf course in your backyard using sidewalk chalk to draw the course and plastic cups placed on their sides as the holes. Include obstacles such as garden hoses, dirt mounds and ramps. Purchase a mini golf set for the fathers to use to challenge their skills, or allow them to use their own set of clubs while the kids use the play set. Instruct the dads to play through the course with their children and keep score to see who wins.

Give dad a challenge with this creative Father's Day game. Help the children draw, color and cut out animals shapes from construction paper. Have the children place the shapes around the house and yard. Hang them in trees or doorways using string, prop them in bushes, and tape them to chair tops. Give Dad a sling shot and a package of ping pong balls and tell him to go hunting around the house and yard. This game can be played just by Dad or with the children. He is sure to enjoy practicing his aiming skills while shooting the animals.

This Father's Day game can be played by Dad and kids, or by a group of dads at a Father's Day party. Each father playing will have a turn to shoot the ball through the hoop as many times as he can for a one- to two-minute period. Have the children keep time and retrieve the ball for their dad. Once they miss their turn is over. The two dads with the highest scores win and get to be team captains. They get to choose their teams and play a game of traditional basketball.

The first observance of Father's Day actually took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. It was organized by Mrs. Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in the Monongah Mining disaster. Overshadowed by other events in West Virginia, therefore not registed and all credits went to Sonora Dodd. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.[3] Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.
