How to Find Fish Oil for Kids in Stores

How to Find Fish Oil for Kids in Stores thumbnail
Fish oil supplements can be found in natural food stores, supermarkets and drugstores.

Researchers have found several positive effects of omega-3 fatty acids on brain and neurological functioning. Studies show omega-3s may be beneficial to children with attention deficit disorder and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. Fish oil is a natural, concentrated source of omega-3s. It's also regarded as a safe choice for children as the mercury and other toxins commonly found in fish are filtered out of fish oil supplement products. Luckily for parents, these have become readily available in natural food stores, drugstores and many mainstream supermarkets.

  1. Consultations

    • Consult your pediatrician before giving fish oil to your child. The University of Maryland Medical Center warns that pediatric use of fish oil is a relatively recent development and thus has not been thoroughly researched. Parents should always work under the supervision of a pediatric specialist or psychiatrist before taking action.

    Specifics

    • Ask your child's doctor for specific doses that will be safe. In many cases, a physician will advise testing the child on a very small dose and then increasing the dosage as the child can tolerate. Fish oil can be hard on even adult stomachs and cause belching, stomach upset and diarrhea.

    Locations

    • Visit your nearest natural foods store. They are most likely to carry a selection of quality fish oils. If that's not convenient or practical, check out the nutritional supplement aisle of your local drugstore or supermarket. Many regional and national chains have increased their selection of natural foods and nutritional supplements.

    Product Grades

    • Look for fish oils high in EPA and DHA fatty acids. These are the "active ingredients" of fish oil. The average fish oil capsule has 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA. However, premium products can range up to 560mg of EPA and 310mg of DHA per capsule. If you can find them, they are likely to be more effective.
