School Uniform Styles
A school uniform is a standard outfit of a specific style worn by students to conform to the dress code of an educational institution. Most schools that use uniforms have a distinct one, with wide variations in uniform styles based on the type of school and location. The uniform serves to identify students as belonging to a particular institution. There are usually two sets of uniform styles, one for the girls and one for the boys. Some institutions allow minor variations in the school uniform styles for each gender, to allow for different body shapes or to show distinctions in class or rank among students. Military schools, private schools and Catholic schools often require uniforms.

Typical School Uniform Styles
-
School uniforms usually ensure that students look professional. Boys' uniforms often consist of a light-colored shirt, subdued tie in the school's colors and dark or khaki pants or shorts. Many schools also have a blazer as part of the uniform. Girls' uniforms normally consist of a light-colored blouse and a darker-colored skirt, or a dress or a blouse worn under a pinafore. Some girls' uniforms also include a blazer or a tie, although these are common only in temperate climates. Pants are also allowed for girls in some institutions. Most schools require that a school badge or identifier with the school's logo be worn as part of the uniform for both genders.
American School Uniform Styles
-
Public schools in the United States do not generally require uniforms. Most schools have opted to put dress codes in place as a way of ensuring greater uniformity of dress among students. Private schools usually enforce a British uniform style for students, with boys being required to wear a blazer, pants (or short trousers for the younger children), a shirt and tie. Girls are required to wear a blouse and skirt, often with a tie and blazer. Catholic schools typically require a tie, shirt and slacks, or skirts for girls. Military academies and boarding schools require formal military-style uniforms.

Seasonal Variation
-
Uniform styles may vary with the season or the weather. Some schools only require the more formal uniform styles during the colder months, with students being allowed to wear lighter, more breathable fabrics and shorts or skorts and Capri pants during the warmer months. Tights may be worn in colder months and socks in warmer weather. The blazer is often required only for public appearances, especially during warm weather. Some stricter schools do not allow for any variation in uniform style, regardless of season or temperature.
Catholic School Uniforms
-
Catholic schools tend to enforce a school uniform policy, and Catholic school uniforms are one of the best-known school uniform styles. The typical Catholic school uniform style for girls consists of a blouse, sweater or jumper, pleated plaid skirt or tartan kilt, mary jane-style shoes, socks and sometimes a tie. The boys' uniform usually consists of a tie, light-colored or white shirt and dark pants.
