Ideas for a Ladybug Baby Shower Cake

Ideas for a Ladybug Baby Shower Cake thumbnail
Ladybug-themed baby showers are growing in popularity.

A ladybug theme is a fun choice for a baby shower. Ladybugs are gender-neutral, so they can be used for baby boys, baby girls or even when the gender has not been announced. Ladybugs also symbolize good luck: a perfect wish for an expecting mother. With a little creativity, you'll have no problem incorporating ladybugs into your decorations and baby shower cake. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Ladybug-shaped Cake

    • For a cake that is shaped like a ladybug, you will need one cake baked in a dome-shaped pan (the body) and one cupcake (the head). Turn both cakes so that the flat side of each is on the bottom. Cover each with red icing. Add spots to the body using black icing or Junior Mints candy. Pipe on black icing to make eyes and a mouth, and stick two pieces of black licorice in the cupcake for the antennae.

    Garden Ladybug Cake

    • Bake two round cakes of different sizes for a two-tiered cake, or bake a large rectangular cake. When the cakes are cooled, cover each one in light brown buttercream frosting. (If you are making a two-tiered cake, place the smaller layer on top of the larger one and secure it with more icing.) Mix together gingersnap cookie crumbs and brown sugar and press the crumbs all over the cake so that it looks like a layer of dirt is covering the cake. Decorate the cake with pieces of chocolate grass (made from melted and cooled green candy, or white chocolate mixed with green coloring). Add small ladybugs around the cake using red and black buttercream.

    Ladybug Cupkaes

    • Cupcakes are another option for a ladybug-themed baby shower. Frost the tops of cooled cupcakes with red icing. Then, pipe a line of chocolate frosting down the middle of each cupcake. Add an oval of the chocolate icing at one end of this line to make the ladybug's head. Place malted milk balls (cut in half) or black M&M'S as spots on the body. Place red M&M'S on the head as eyes. Add black licorice laces for the antennae and you'll have ladybug cupcakes that are almost too cute to eat.

    Color Options

    • The typical red and black ladybug works well for a modern baby shower theme, but it isn't your only choice. If your mom-to-be prefers the more traditional pastel pink or blue baby shower colors, a ladybug theme can still work. Ice your cake or cupcakes with pink or light blue frosting instead of red, and use a pastel brown instead of black for the spots and head of the ladybug. Bright yellow and orange ladybugs could add a modern and colorful twist to the ladybug theme.
