Siblings can work together to earn money and share the profit.

Assist children in learning about money management and providing for themselves with simple jobs to earn money. Children see firsthand the rewards that come from the work and delight in shopping with real money. There are a multitude of ways for children to make money from family and friends and small-scale business opportunities. Since children are involved, all work requires planning, approval and supervision by parents to ensure safety.

  1. Lemonade Stand

    • Lemonade stands have been a method of making money for children for countless years. While sometimes the cost of materials to the parents can exceed the money earned, children feel that they worked diligently for the money. A table, inexpensive Styrofoam cups, a juice jug and water to add to frozen lemonade mix is all that is needed. Children can work with adults to determine the price or allow those walking or driving buy to donate for the drink. On the plus side, there is little risk of the children dehydrating on a hot day even if there is not much lemonade left for potential customers.

    Car Washing

    • Some weekends it seems that every corner has a group of kids offering to wash your car in exchange for money toward personal interests or for a charitable cause. Children can offer to wash a neighbor's cars for a couple of dollars or clean out the inside and wipe down the windows. If a corner car wash fails, grandparents are not known for saying no, and a weekly washing or cleaning for them or other relatives can become a routine. For older children interested in raising money for a charitable cause, many stores will allow car-washing groups to use their parking lots to help a good cause. Since this involves touching other people's vehicles, adult supervision is strongly recommended.

    Babysitting

    • If the child is old enough and mature enough to care for children, a babysitting job may be the answer. Friends and family often require someone trustworthy to watch the little ones for an evening out, trips to the store or simply to get things done around the house. Children can offer their services to family and friends, or employ a free method of advertising their services, but adults should be involved and do some screening for safety reasons before the child accepts any job. By building a reputation as a trustworthy babysitter, the child can quickly find themselves with many offers to babysit through referrals from previous or current clients.

    Pet Sitting

    • A beloved pet may need attention during times when the owner cannot be home. This presents an opportunity for a responsible child to make money caring for the pet. Duties might include walking a dog, feeding the animals, changing litter or providing playtime. In some cases, the owner is only looking for someone to be present in case of emergency, so the child can make money by watching television. Older children may provide grooming services, such as brushing and washing animals, if they possess adequate knowledge and are strong enough.
