Fun Games to Play at Day Camp

Day camp is a time when kids meet new friends, learn teamwork, build self-esteem and discover new activities. Campers also go on field trips and have daily scheduled crafts throughout the week. However, on the days there are no field trips scheduled, campers can still have fun by playing a variety of games.

  1. Auto Trip

    • Have campers sit in circle. Each camper selects a piece a paper from a bowl labeled with a car part, such as door, hood, window, headlight and tire. A storyteller starts to tell the campers about a car trip. During the story, the storyteller will mention the car part. When the car parts come up in the story, the camper with the particular part stands up and follows the storyteller. Once the storyteller bellows "blowout," each camper moves quickly to find an empty seat.

    Celebrity Bingo

    • Celebrity Bingo offers a twist to the old-school bingo. Camp counselors need to prepare the bingo cards prior allowing the camper to play. Supplies needed include blank bingo boards, small images of celebrities and bingo markers. Gather small images of celebrities from different magazines to fill the numerous spaces on the blank bingo cards. Make sure to make copies of all of the celebrity pictures to call out during the game. Start the game by randomly selecting a celebrity image. Just like regular bingo, campers will mark the bingo card if the celebrity appears on the bingo cards.

    Hodge Podge Ball

    • Campers stand in a circle and leave about 12 inches of space between each player. Each player selects a utensil, such as an angled-handle spatula, soup ladle, slotted spoon, a wooden spoon or rolling pin. The game starts with a camper batting a tennis ball with her particular utensil to another player in the circle. The camper that receives the tennis ball needs to bat the ball to another camper. The tennis ball must bounce once between each camper. The camper has to leave the game if she is unable to receive the tennis ball or cannot send it to another camper. Play the game until one player is standing. Before the campers play another round, each camper has to pass the utensil to the next person to his right.

    Statue

    • Campers can play the Statue game with at least four people. One camper plays the storekeeper, another camper plays the buyer and the other campers are statues. The storekeeper turns the statues around in a circle and lets each statue go. Each statue has to stay in the position he lands and has to create a name for the position. For instance, if a camper lands with one hand in the air, he can say he is the Statue of Liberty. Each camper mentions to the storekeeper what statute he has selected. Eventually the buyer arrives and the storekeeper talks about each statue. In addition, the storekeeper turns on each statue by touching his nose to demonstrate what the statue does for the buyer. Note if a statue happens to be a runner, the statue can run around turning on the other statues. The buyer selects the statue he wants after reviewing each statue. Then the game ends and starts over with different people.
