Refrigerator Problems With Odors

Refrigerator odors are not uncommon. Consequently, a host of solutions have been developed to remove the odors. Keep in mind, however, that determining the source of the odor is crucial to removing the odor and preventing the odor from returning.

Causes

There are several potential causes for the odors emanating from your refrigerator. The most obvious source is food or liquid that has gone bad. Old milk and rotten vegetables are common culprits. A more problematic source is frost that accumulated on the inside of the refrigerator and begins to smell. This is often the result of ruined insulation.

Free Solutions

Fortunately, there are several free solutions that you can try before spending money to rid your refrigerator of a foul odor. First, search your refrigerator for old food and dispose of it. Next, clean the refrigerator thoroughly. You should check the manufacturer's instructions for proper cleaning methods, but generally, you can wipe down the inside and outside of the refrigerator with a mild detergent, hot water and a disinfectant.

Other Solutions

If the aforementioned methods do not get rid of the odor, purchase baking soda or activated charcoal and place it inside the refrigerator. Both of these products will absorb the odor. Note that it is safe to leave the food in the refrigerator with these items. If the odor cannot be absorbed, consider fixing the insulation or rubber gaskets along the door of the refrigerator. If this still does not work, consider contacting the manufacturer, as there could be a mechanical problem.

Warnings

Deodorizing products merely serve to mask the foul odor, and will not remove the odor emanating from your refrigerator. More importantly, if your refrigerator smells musty, there may be mold growing inside. Mold can be cleaned using a detergent; however, you should put on rubber gloves, eye protection and an N-95 respirator mask before attempting to clean the mold. This is because exposure to mold can cause serious health problems, including eye irritation and respiratory complications.
