Arguments for the School Uniform

School uniforms can instill a sense of confidence and school pride.

Before implementing a uniform policy, school administrators, legislators, parents and educators extensively researched the effects of a mandatory school uniform policy. Studies show mixed results, and no consensus was reached in the education or legislative communities. Isolating and tracking the effects of a school uniform policy alone are difficult since many schools introduce other changes at the same time as they introduce a school uniform policy; subsequent changes in behavior and academic performance could result from other factors. Nevertheless, advocates of a school uniform policy continue to argue its benefits.

  1. Non-Uniform Clothing as a Distraction

    • Fashionistas may be too busy worrying about their "look" than paying attention in math class, so one argument for the school uniform goes. Many people feel that students are distracted by clothing and accessories and that introducing uniforms increases students' academic focus. Supporters of the school uniform policy argue that it's not just the girls who could benefit; boys often pay too much attention to clothing and accessories as well. Though studies have not yielded conclusive or consistent results, many educators are convinced that school uniforms increase students' ability to thrive in the classroom.

    School Uniforms Make Schools Safer

    • Schools in communities ravaged by gang violence sometimes require students to wear uniforms to prevent students from wearing colors or items associated with a particular gang. Many school officials also feel that wearing uniforms helps diminish bullying and student alienation. In the winter of 2008, a middle-school student shot and killed his classmate Lawrence King for wearing make-up and feminine boots to school, reports the New York Times in "Boy's Killing, Labeled a Hate Crime." Supporters of school uniforms argue that alarming incidents such as this would not happen were uniforms required of all students.

    Etiquette

    • Some school uniform advocates argue that uniforms help prepare students for real-world hierarchies. Many professionals dress in uniforms. Uniforms tell others about an individual's roles, obligations and position. Supporters of school uniforms point to dress as a form of etiquette that demonstrates respect for the activities performed while in uniform. Advocates argue that wearing uniforms helps students to get into "learning mode" and reminds them to respect themselves, their instructors and each other.

    School Pride

    • Supporters of school uniforms argue that uniforms instill a sense of pride in students. In addition, uniforms can bring a sense of community to the classroom. School uniforms might fulfill functions similar to sports team uniforms. Like the uniforms worn by athletes, school uniforms can also build self-esteem and increase collective team or school confidence.
