A certificate from a marine welding school can help you get a job working on an oil rig or ship.

Marine welding is a skill that is in demand for oil rigs, marine construction and ship repair. If you are interested in a career as a marine welder you need to attend a commercial diving school that has courses specializing in underwater welding and cutting. These courses will teach you about the equipment used, safety and how to weld above and below water.

  1. The Ocean Corporation

    • The Ocean Corporation is located in Houston, Texas and was founded in September 1969. The school offers in-demand programs such as underwater welding, commercial diver training, ROV's (robotic vehicles) and NDT (non destructive training) weld inspector training. Admission requirements for those who apply include a copy of your secondary school records, a filled out application form and an application fee of $100. Qualified applicants may receive financial assistance such as Pell Grants, scholarships or other federal aid like Stafford Loans. The programs offered by the school have a maximum length of two years.

    Divers Academy International

    • Divers Academy International is located in Erial, New Jersey and offers a five-month training program in commercial diving. The coursework includes underwater welding and cutting, pipe penetration, rigging and salvage. This program emphasizes full immersion training and teaching practical skills over theory. To be accepted to this school an applicant must have a secondary school diploma or equivalent (GED), strong swimming skills and be physically healthy with no medical restrictions. A certification in scuba diving can also be an advantage but it is not required.

    Commercial Diving Academy

    • The Commercial Diving Academy is located in Jacksonville, Florida. It is the only internationally recognized school in the United States that offers welding training in association with Specialty Welds Limited, U.K. The program lasts for 20 weeks and it is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) and affiliated with the American Welding Society (AWS). The training program is geared toward equipping students with the proper skills needed to yield high quality fillet welds. The objective of the program is to train students in high quality manual metal arc (MMA) welding skills above and below water. Students are required to have a high school diploma or GED, be 18 years of age, be in good physical health, have some mechanical ability and good swimming ability, and have the ability to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card. Once the coursework is completed the student can receive a welder certification card and a certificate of successful completion for underwater welding.

    International Diving Institute

    • The International Diving Institute is located in North Charleston, South Carolina and offers a variety of courses through its commercial diving school. Some of the courses include topside welding and cutting, safety precautions for welding, wet welding, underwater tools and equipment, underwater burning and hazardous materials. The course consists of a minimum of 16 weeks and has a maximum of 10 students per class. The students must obtain a minimum of 625 hours of formal instruction that is set according to the standard of ANSI (American National Standards Institute). Once the training is complete the student receives an ACDI (Association of Diving Contractors International) certification card upon graduation.
