Classes for a Marine Engineer & Architect
Marine engineering and, even more so, marine architecture are relatively specialized fields. A limited number of degree programs in these specialties exist, therefore, particularly at the bachelor's degree level. You may also find marine engineering referred to as oceanographic engineering, naval engineering, naval construction, coastal engineering or offshore engineering.

Marine Engineer: Bachelor's
-
A relatively small number of colleges offer bachelor's level programs in marine engineering. Some additional colleges, however, offer more general programs in civil or environmental engineering with the potential for concentration in marine science. Some courses you will find in marine engineering at the bachelor's level include wave mechanics; offshore and coastal structures; propulsion systems; diving and moored systems; fluid mechanics; and naval architecture.
Marine Engineer: Master's
-
A greater number of institutions offer marine engineering programs at the master's level than at the bachelor's level. Some representative courses at the master's level for marine engineering include ship auxiliary systems design, dynamics of ocean systems, differential equations, hydrodynamics, marine dredging and mining, and numerical simulation techniques.
-
Marine Engineer: Ph.D.
-
At the Ph.D. level of marine engineering instruction, representative instructional content includes such courses as underwater acoustics, estuary hydrodynamics, sediment transport and ports and harbors.
Marine Architect
-
Marine architecture, also called naval architecture, has a specialized enough nature that only a few schools offer programs in this discipline. Students interested in this discipline may train through a marine engineering course, also. Some important study areas, as described at the BAE website include ship and external environment such as habitability; maneuvering and propulsion; and flotation and trim.
Career Choices
-
Some career choices for those with marine engineering training include ship design engineer, naval combat engineer, marine equipment specialist and hydrographic surveyor. Marine architects design ship hulls according to client specifications. For both marine engineers and marine architects, working for the U. S. Coast Guard or the U. S. Navy's Naval Sea System Command is one employment option. Many, however, work for private shipbuilding companies. Some other marine engineers and marine architects work for research and design firms.
Outlook, Salary
-
The current outlook for marine engineers and naval architects as of 2011 involves a slower than average growth in comparison all other professions. The BLS estimates the growth rate for this profession at 6 percent between 2008 and 2018. However, the BLS also estimates that due to subsequent natural attrition of current workers in the field and increased demand for new vessels, the profession has a more positive long-term growth prospect. Marine engineers and architects had a median annual salary of $74,140 in 2008.
